SPORTS UPDATE – Girls Basketball @ Tintic

Watching the shot go in for 2 points smallOur girl’s basketball team traveled to Tintic High School on Monday night. It was the first time that the Lady Eagles had gone to Tintic to play basketball.

The JV game was really exciting. We trailed through the first half. Ellice A. helped keep us close scoring four, of our 12, first half points. Kareena P. scored her first points this season in the first half as well. The score after the first half was 16-12 in favor of Tintic. Stephanie S. came alive in the second half, scoring 6 points. The lead changed hands several times during the half and with 4 seconds left the score was tied. Jessi O. was fouled and went to the line to shoot free throws. She calmly made both of them. The buzzer sounded before Tintic could get a shot off and our JV team left the floor with their first victory of the season.  Kareena P. With a Steal small

The Varsity game did not go as well. We started off well and had the lead at one point. The tight man to man pressure defense was tough for our girls to play against. We had not practiced against man to man yet and our girls, while playing as hard as they could, did not fare well. As mentioned however, the girls played with a lot of heart and not one of them gave up. As a team, we now know some of the things that we need to work on to improve ourselves. The final score of the Varsity game was 40 – 10. Alexa L. had 4 points before leaving in the first quarter with a sprained ankle. Ellice A had 4 points and Michaela B. scored 2.

Next up is Wasatch Academy in Mount Pleasant. That game will be on Dec. 1.

SPORTS UPDATE – Lady Eagles Kick Off Season Against Dugway

Thursday night was our first game of the 2009-2010 basketball season. The Mustangs form Dugway made their way down I-80 to the Eagle’s Nest. Our girls were nervous. Most of the team had never played in a competitive basketball game.

The JV game pretty much was dominated by Baily F. She scored all 8 of our points. She was a force in the paint, backing down the competition. At halftime we were up by a score of 6 to 4. The Mustangs used their team speed to make a run on us in the beginning of the second half. We were never able to recover after that. The final score was 19 -8 Mustangs.

Our girls looked a little bit shell shocked during the Varsity game. Dugway jumped all over us 14 – 0 in the first quarter. We were a tad bit better in the second quarter being out scored 8 – 2. Half time score was 22 – 2. During halftime we talked about rebounding, something we did not do well in the first half. The girls came out more focused on that area of the game in the second half. We were able to control the ball much more efficiently and played even with Dugway through the second half.

Leading Scorers

  • Alexa L.               4
  • Michaela B.         8
  • Cami D.               2
  • Baily F.                2

We play again tonight in Eureka, Utah. JV start time will be 4:15 and Varsity will be 6:00. Wish us luck.

SPORTS UPDATE – Night With The Lady Eagles

Kareena P makes a steal smaller

Kareena P. goes for the steal

Tonight we had our annual Night With The Lady Eagles preseason scrimmage. The team was divided into two groups and they played a shortened game. Most games have four – eight minute quarters. Tonight the girls played four – five minute quarters. For many of the girls this was the first time they had played in a game that was timed and had officials (Thanks to Stacey Leak who was our official for the scrimmage). The girls showed that they have been working hard in practice and learning a lot.

The White team pulled ahead early on a couple of shots from Alexa L. She was getting great passes from Jesse O. The White team was able to push the lead to 14 -6. The Blue team was not going to quit and lay down. In the closing moments of the game they were able to bring the score to 14 – 12 behind a couple of putbacks by Michaela B. and some great free throw shooting by Ellice A. The Blue team ran out of time and as the buzzer sounded the final score remained 14 – 12. The girls had a great time and we, as coaches, were able to see what we need to work on. We also saw tons of progress.

ARTICLE- Teens, Technology, and Your Relationship

girl texting with head cropped outIn our last podcast Jeff talked about a blog post that would be forthcoming that would focus on teens and technology. This is that blog post!

There is no question that the use of technology is on the rise in our culture. More and more people are connecting to the internet at higher speeds. Cell phones have become a necessity in our fast paced world. Ipods, Nintendo DSs, and PSP’s can keep us entertained anywhere we go. How is this increase in the use of technology affecting our families, especially the teenagers in our families?

Teens are wired. They have what seemingly unlimited options when it comes to technology they can use to stay connected and entertain themselves. 87% of teens surveyed say that they are online, with more and more saying they have high speed connections. Of the 300 million people that use facebook, 9% of them are teens. Research cited in July 2008 stated that 83% of teens own a cell phone and the average teen generated 50 to 70 text messages per day. Cyber-communication is definitely being utilized by teens to maintain relationships. There are positives and negatives that come along with using technology to communicate.

New technology presents many benefits, both for teens and their parents. Having a cell phone on them makes contacting parents much easier. Whether they need a ride or are checking in throughout the evening, cell phones makes this type of communication simple. It is also easier for parents to contact their teen, especially through text messaging. Many cell phone companies now offer GPS services that allow parents to know the physical location of their children. Social Networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace allow teens to keep connecting with friends through chat features. There is also tons of good information on sites such as YouTube. One of the greatest benefits to teens is that they can exhibit their creativity by becoming content creators through blogs and online video.

There are challenges that come form overuse/misuse of these technologies. One of the biggest problems is that teens can become isolated from friends and parents. As teens spend more and more time on the computer and on their cell phones, there is an appearance of connecting with people. However, connecting with people online is not the same as connecting in person. There is no eye contact. There is no opportunity for physical responses, such as smiling or appropriate touch. Body language and voice inflection is a huge part of communication and those elements are missed when using text messaging or chating to communicate.

Connecting with your teen is the first of the major tasks that we have been discussing in our podcasts and other blog entries. As a parent, it falls upon you to place boundaries on the use of technology for your teen. Agreements such as ‘no cell phones at the dinner table’ (my 6 year old son actually came up with that agreement at our house so he would have dad’s full attention) or ‘no cell phones on our camping tirp’ can give you time with your teen that is free of the distractions of technology. If you let it, technology can become a major barrier in your efforts to make genuine connection with your child. With appropriate boundaries on technology and using the technique Jeff talks about in the podcasts you can create a powerful, genuine connection with your teen.

Financial Literacy – Hanna’s Favorite Class

Hannas PIctures 023This is my favorite class so far. Being in Financial Literacy has helped me gain an understanding of how it’s going to be in the ‘real’ world. In this class we get to have fake money (which I have a guape) and we have jobs and have the option to go to college. We get paid every six months and when that happens I got cha ching in the bank$. Mr. Edvik does a really good job at teaching us. He has the time and the patience to sit and down and help us understand the real life we are going into. Also we get to buy cars which is really cool too. I just bought a new range rover for 59,000$.  I was able to fakely purchase this car because we are learning about car loans and how they affect your bugdet. Which it won’t affect mine becuase i make bank :)  We do unforseen incidents and its like something extra that will happen to us. Pretty much this class is Bom and everyone should take it.
