Volleyball Game @ Rockwell

What an exciting night at Rockwell High School last night.  Rockwell was a 2A school last year and now they’re
1A.

The games were all close ones.  It was fun to rally back and forth and to see
the nervousness and intensity on the court during the varsity games. At times
it was so loud that our team couldn’t hear me from the bench. We came up short
on the last game, but the girls gave a great effort.  We missed some serves that hurt us, and we’re
still working on fine tuning their skills.
Rockwell will be at the Wendover tournament and we hope to meet up with
them again.

Brit led the team in serves, hits, and blocks.  Meghan (our libero) did a great job of
passing all night.

JV scores:

WRA 25- Rockwell 19

WRA 25- Rockwell 20

Varsity scores:

Lady Eagles Volleyball Season Starts

Volleyball is under way, our first games were this week.  On Tuesday we played Tintic at their place.

JV scores:  Tintic 25-WRA 5          Varsity scores:   Tintic 25- WRA 12

Tintic25- WRA 16                                      Tintic25- WRA 14

Tintic 15- WRA                                           Tintic 25- WRA 8

JV- We struggled with communication and passing the ball but had some bright moments and some rallies and are still learning where we need to be. I think we got a feel for how quick the game moves and we’re working on knowing our positions better.

Varsity- Being our first game I was happy with the way the girls played.  We are only going to get
better with experience.  We struggled at times with communication and rotations, but that will come with learning to play together.  We have a lot of potential and the girls are working hard each practice.

Yesterday we had our first home game against Dugway.

JV scores: Dugway 25- WRA 11    Varisty scores: Dugway 25-WRA 9

WRA 25- Dugway 18                               Dugway 25- WRA 6

Dugway 16- WRA 14                               Dugway 25- WRA 20

WRA 17- Dugway 15

Dugway 15- WRA 11

JV- We came out with a lot of energy on the court.  Compared to our first game, we improved a lot with moving and talking. I was very proud of them and the effort they gave. The matches go 3 out of 5 games.  We took them to 5 games and lost 2 of them by only 2 points. I want to thank ouramazing fans, they cheered us on and gave us added intensity on the court.  Sarah served 7 in a row to help with one of our wins.

Varsity- We struggled the first couple of games with serve receive.  One of Dugways girls served 11 in a row before we could return it.  Once we got through that we played fairly well. Brit had a couple of blocks on the
net which threw Dugways hitters off. Cory had 6 serves in a row  and Haley had 7 that got us back in one of the games.  Meghan had some great digs on both JV and Varsity.

Our next game is Monday the 29th @ Rockwell. The game on the 30th has been cancelled. Thanks for all your support!

Teens and Studying

Russell HykenArticle by Russell Hyken, PhD

With the school year starting, how can I help my son be a better student and study more efficiently?

I recently asked a group of high school freshman how they study. The answers were insightfully intelligent as well as interestingly unique. One student commented that he studies the big points because the little stuff doesn’t matter, another commented he just stares at his book for 15 minute before taking a break, and one looks for the “bold” words to learn and memorize.

These ideas are creative solutions, but they are also ineffective methods to cultivate student skills. Traditional values related to scheduling and environment are the best methods to deal with the emerging demands of a high school career. Students should develop their own study style while adhering to “old school” principles.

Time management is the first step. Consider that most teens spend at least 35 hours a week in classes, have extracurricular activities, and engage in life activities such as doctor appointments, social activities and house hold chores. Balancing homework hours with other needs is a crucial concept to school success. If your son doesn’t have a plan, then he won’t have the time he needs. Teens should track both daily assignments and long term projects using a planner to schedule due dates and outside activities.

When a student studies is important to knowledge retention. Some need to complete homework before relaxing and others prefer an afterschool break. Once comfortably engaged in academic pursuits, teens should prioritize the importance of work starting with the most difficult tasks and working upward to the most familiar material. Learning occurs best when the body and brain are rested and alert.
The proper ambiance will keep your son on task. Comfortable couches create an environment that is too relaxed and not conducive to focused work. Studying should take place at a large desk in a well lit room. The study area should be stocked with pens, pencils, paper and other essential aids. Provide nearby access to healthy snacks and water helping your son avoid the distractible desire to take a trip to another part of the house.

Lastly, don’t hesitate to monitor your son’s progress. The occasional walk-by in a passive, non confrontational manner will ensure your teen stays on task. Knowing mom is just around the corner will assist with any impulsive urge to stare into space or engage with technological diversions.

Have a conversation with you teen about what works best and potential problem areas. Learning to study is an evolutionary process that needs adjustment along the way. Celebrate successes and learn from mistakes.

West Ridge Academy: The Pornography Drug – Part 1

What about pornography?  It is a multi-billion dollar industry.  Even though it is considered by some researchers to be the third most addicting behavior, some may wonder if it is harmful.  In this podcast, Eric Allred, LMFT joins Jeff as they discuss pornography, and it’s potential harm. Particular focus is given to the prevalence of pornography addiction as it affects the individual, the family and society. Warning signs are also identified.

Richard Paul Evans Devotional Aug 28th

Evans graduated from Cottonwood High School in Salt Lake City. He graduated with a B.A. degree from the University of Utah in 1984. While working as an advertising executive he wrote a Christmas story for his children. Unable to find a publisher or an agent, he self-published the work in 1993 as a paperback novella entitled The Christmas Box. He distributed it to book stores in his community.

The book became a local bestseller, prompting Evans to publish the book nationally. The next year The Christmas Box hit #2 on the New York Times bestseller list, inciting an auction for the publishing rights among the world’s top publishing houses. Evans signed a publishing deal with Simon & Schuster, who paid Evans $4.2 million in an advance. Released in hardcover in 1995, The Christmas Box became the first book to simultaneously reach the number-one position on the New York Times bestseller list for both paperback and hardcover editions. That same year, the book was made into a television movie of the same title, starring Richard Thomas and Maureen O’Hara.

Evans has subsequently written eleven nationally best-selling books, including those for children, most with conservative Christian themes and appealing to family values. His 1996 book Timepiece was made into a television movie featuring James Earl Jones and Ellen Burstyn, as was 1998′s The Locket, which starred Vanessa Redgrave, and 2003′s A Perfect Day, which starred Rob Lowe and Christopher Lloyd. Evans has won several awards for his writings including the American Mother Book Award, two first place Storytelling World awards and Romantic Times award for Best Women’s Fiction.

In 1994, Evans founded “The Christmas Box House International” charity to help abandoned, neglected or abused children. As of 2006, more than 13,000 children had been temporarily housed in the Christmas Box House shelters. Parents of five children, Evans and his wife Keri divide their time between homes in Utah and Italy.
