Veteran’s Day Assembly

11-11-11

It is not often that today’s children have the opportunity to step back and look outside of themselves at lives bigger picture. Our students had the opportunity to have three current Soldiers, who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan, speak to them about their experiences and   those of military personnel who have served in the past.  As each of the speakers shared their thoughts all of the students were attentive and wanting to learn. Here are is a synopsis of the event.

The assembly started with a group of our boy scouts conducting a flag ceremony and presenting the colors. Followed by the pledge and nine female students singing, “God Bless America.” It was an excellent rendition of the song. They were followed by three speakers.

SSG Thomas Wilson was first to speak and took excerpts from “The Republic of Plato” describing the guardians of the city. “The guardians perched upon the parapets endured the heat of the sun the chilling sting of the winter rain. The endured pain, so the souls within the walls may enjoy peace and justice”. He tied this into today’s Servicemen and women and how the while they leave the everyday luxuries of modern living, their families, and things that we as Americans hold dear, they do so for our freedoms. He then added that Americans have such an opportunity to support these men and women through letters of encouragement and support of their families while they are gone.

SFC Keene then spoke on brother and sisterhood of the military. He stated, “That it is a rare love that you have when you are willing to lay down your life for that of someone who is next to you in a fox hole”.  He then shared two experiences of Medal of Honor Recipients and the bravery that was shown in years past. This was a very emotional time for many of the students as they learned of the youngest recipient at the age of 17 and the heroic acts that he did putting his life and limbs at risk to save his fellow Marines.

CPT Naughton, HHC Commander of the 807th Medical Command, then spoke of how the Military was a positive turning point in his life. He gave a brief history of his life and said, “The Military did something that everyone else around me couldn’t do; give me a purpose and self-respect”.  He then turned the time over to the students to ask questions of which there were many.

The day ended with everyone standing and singing our national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner”. It was a wonderful hour filled with emotion, feeling and remembrance of those who protect America.
